⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Niles
Age: 25-ish
Canon: Fire Emblem: Fates
Canon Point: Post-Revelation Route

Background: Niles, Fire Emblem: Fates

Personality:
”Well, if it's an order from my liege's royal sibling, I am obligated to obey. I may appear somewhat despicable, but I have the utmost loyalty for Lord Leo.”

Niles is a sadistic, horribly flirty human being with a quality of driving people into frustration with the words he says. Almost every word out of his mouth is a double entendre and leads to making people quite flustered. There’s nothing more in the world he enjoys than seeing someone being made uncomfortable by his actions. His entire being creates almost unnecessary problems for many people, including royal siblings, other members of the army, and his fellow retainer, Odin, if only because a conversation with him almost always brings out a filthy, dirty sentence, or an action.

The worst fact for many people is the way he gets a sick pleasure at seeing someone else’s pain, particularly someone who, in his mind, deserves the pain. The way he grins and smirks whenever someone is upset by a thing he says, or something he does. Death of an enemy, for him, is the sweetest he’s tasted (‘That was good for me’ is one of his quotes for killing an enemy), and the higher the enemy is ranked, for him, it becomes even more of a sweet taste.

"My parents abandoned me in the slums of Nohr. I was raised by thieves and criminals. I learned fast. I did what had to be done to survive! So forgive me if I'm a little jealous. When I see someone who is oblivious to suffering, I like to give them an education. That moment when they discover their first taste of pain is pure bliss!"

Niles grew up as a slum rat, a man who was abandoned by his father while his mother was pregnant, and then his mother abandoned him well before he knew her face. He was raised up by street thieves and became one of their own, joining their group and robbing the rich and noble from a young age. As such, he got a first-hand lesson in seeing people who he feels didn’t work for those riches enjoying them. As well, he also got a first-hand lesson in what a good feeling it is to watch someone truly suffer for the first time in their lives.

It stems from jealousy. Niles is an easily jealous person with zero qualms about admitting when he is. Seeing all the royals and nobles enjoying their lives the way he couldn’t, and the fact that he lost one of the last few things he had (which was his left eye), grew a green-eyed monster in him almost impossible to quell. As such, he takes his pleasure from making those he’s jealous of suffer under his own hand, and it’s one of the few things he ever had growing up in this world.

A man with nothing to lose has very little to fear in death. When he was abandoned by his makeshift family while attempting theft of the Nohrian palace after getting caught, he pleaded for death. Leo, the prince who almost executed him, saw something in him and took him on as his retainer. For Niles, at that time, he saw no worth in himself, and nothing left to live for, and would immediately embrace death with all it had to offer. Even today, the only thing he truly has to live for is his Lord, Leo of Nohr.

Leo is a special case for Niles. Niles doesn’t show him the side of him that’s sadistic, or the flirty side that makes people embarrassed. Certainly he’ll show it to people even related to Leo, but his Lord almost never directly sees his actions. He has a loyalty to Leo for saving his life, and he would do any dirty or filthy task in order to appease his orders, or even to uphold his reputation. He tracks down information about people if he feels they could be a danger to his lord, or following people if they’ll hinder the war. He’s devoted himself to Leo, and would die for the man he so clearly cares about without a second thought.

None of this is to say he doesn’t care about people. It takes a long time, certainly, and he doesn’t like to show it off so quickly, but if someone is so interesting to him, and worth the time it would take, he doesn’t mind showing off his kinder side to them. His ability to root through the underworld has helped to bring back a person’s prized possession, even though he traded in a favor he could have used for anyone else. And even without pulling favors, in almost every A-ranked support he does (a look into the relationships of two people in further detail), he does something nice to someone. Offering to take the weight off their chest, increasing interest for a girl who is looking to attract suitors, or even, arrogantly, allowing someone to become his friend. But this takes time, and it’s not anything Niles is willing to show so easily.

“Perhaps I just wanted to see that flustered look on your face again. No, that's not it... Perhaps, in a twisted sort of way... I wish to connect with you as a person.”

Niles’ life was one filled with tragedy before he met his lord, and he still has yet to grow out of his desire to enjoy someone suffer so greatly. But his heart of gold, and his unwavering loyalty make him one of Lord Leo’s most incredible, and trusted retainers. And for Niles, that’s all in his life that he needs. And an occasional bout of suffering, of course.

Abilities:
As an outlaw, Niles is very excellent at picking locks, it’s actually one of his skills where he can open doors and chests without needing a key. He’s also mastered the bow in such a way that he can even hit people while doing backflips, also a show of his acrobatic talents. As well, based on the way he talks, he seems rather adept at torturing others, putting others in uncomfortable situations with him. Also, as a street rat, he would have basic first aid knowledge to take care of himself.

Another ability is one he’s gained over the years, is how he’s able to easily make contacts for whatever purpose he may have. Gathering information or getting favors, he’s easily able to gather the right contact to use for the right moment.

Alignment: Piphron; Niles has no trust in people besides his lord, and a few select people as he gets close to them. He keeps a wall up, covered in cruelty, to prevent people from getting too close and abusing his trust.

Other:
As discussed with the mods, Niles will have an opt-out post due to his nature.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

General/Emotional Sample:
It was something Niles figured out quickly enough when he arrived and saw what was going on. Emotions controlled things about this place. Some people, upon realizing this, might use it for good, or might simply outright ignore it. For Niles, however, he found something far more fun to do with his emotions. To put it better, someone else’s emotions. Walking through the market was an excellent way to put this into practice. There were many people all around who were fine targets for fun.

Niles chuckled as he walked past a few people. No one worth his time to bother. Mostly people minding their own business on their day to day adventures. Until he passed one stall with a woman who was complaining quite loudly for nothing. Fortune rose from her, as if she was the one in charge of everything. This peaked his interest in the way no one else here could. A perfect target.

He slipped in beside her and turned to look at her with a smirk, “So, it must be true that idle wealth makes for idle brains.” Turning to look at her and getting into her personal space, causing her face to turn a bright red. He smirks, his lips turning cruel and his face turning dark, “Making people suffer for no satisfaction. There are much better ways to become satisfied, you realize.” A dark chuckle left his lips, and a crack of thunder from a dark cloud burst from behind his head. There was an anger in his throat, and the jealous bug of someone who had no idea what she could do should she choose to use her wealth properly.

The woman, in fear, began to turn around as a crack appeared right between them. She completely forgot everything she was trying to take care of her and quickly ran off after tripping. Niles’s heavy smirk turned into a chuckle. Feeling satisfied, the thunder parted, and the sun fell on him again. A flower may have grown in front of him, but Niles crushed it before anyone saw. After all, he can’t be appearing too soft for being so cruel.
